[00:00:25] Speaker A: Hey, everybody. Welcome to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish podcast with Father Greg and J.D. probably Winona's favorite Catholic podcast, now available in 90 second segments. Each week, Father Greg and I connect on a variety of topics related to our faith and our parish in Winona, Ontario. We are here to help spread the good news and further unite our parish community.
This is episode number 44. We are looking ahead to Lent, celebrating St. Timothy and St. Titus, and I want to ask you about events in our parish.
Remember, you can find us on the Spotify, the Apple podcasts, and the YouTubes. So please like or subscribe and we will find your inbox with new content as soon as Lucia has it ready.
I have a quick question before we begin this week.
[00:01:06] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:01:07] Speaker A: So, Father, we're meant to keep the faith to the end.
St. Paul says to fight the good fight till the end. Does that mean we should wait till the final round or you should wait till the final round to land your best joke in the homily?
[00:01:20] Speaker B: No.
[00:01:20] Speaker A: Or do you like to get it out of the way?
[00:01:21] Speaker B: I think we got to just give it all. Give all the best jokes right away.
[00:01:24] Speaker A: All right, very good.
[00:01:25] Speaker B: And just keep coming up with jokes.
[00:01:27] Speaker A: Just keep going. More jokes all the way through. More jokes. More is better. This is one of those times when it's true.
[00:01:32] Speaker B: More is more.
[00:01:34] Speaker A: You better start us off with a prayer, Father.
[00:01:36] Speaker B: Okay. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Heavenly Father, we thank you for your love and the love that you show us by giving us your son, Jesus.
Through his grace, the merits of his cross, and through the outpouring of your Holy Spirit, grant that we may come to know you more and more. Your love, your career. Bless our families and friends, bless our parish, bless our podcast. All we do, may it be guided by you. We ask this in Jesus holy name, the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
[00:02:03] Speaker A: Amen. Thank you. Well, let's reveal our Saints of the Week. Each week we feature a saint or two and share some facts about their lives. Because as we strive to live out our mission as Catholics, we can always look to our Saints for inspiration.
St. Timothy and St. Titus, two of St. Paul's most beloved and trusted disciples, accompanied him on numerous mission journeys aiding in the spread of the Gospel. Timothy, a young convert, became Bishop of Ephesus and where tradition holds him as the angel of the Church.
[00:02:32] Speaker B: Is it Ephesus or Ephesus?
[00:02:34] Speaker A: Depends on where you put the emphasis.
[00:02:37] Speaker B: Okay, got it.
[00:02:39] Speaker A: Golly gee whiz. Okay, so Titus was equally devoted, organized churches in Crete and was sent to Dalmatia, land of the spotted dogs. And he founded the first Christian see at Salona around 65 AD. He was martyred.
[00:02:52] Speaker B: People might think that you mean like land of the spotted dogs.
Have you say that with too much seriousness.
[00:02:57] Speaker A: They had to come from somewhere. Well, not just fire departments.
[00:03:00] Speaker B: Probably don't have time to get into that too much.
[00:03:02] Speaker A: Okay, what can you tell us about.
[00:03:05] Speaker B: Our saints this week? Well, Saints Timothy and Titus were bishops. They were ordained by St. Paul, who himself was a bishop. And they teach us, I think, some really cool lessons. One is the importance of spiritual mentorship. They learned from Paul. They pass it on. Their courage in sharing God's word, their zeal for teaching sound doctrine and spreading the work of the Church, and their perseverance in trials. And, you know, God calls ordinary people to extraordinary things, and we can do it through Christ.
Beautiful.
[00:03:34] Speaker A: It is time for Ask Father Greg. Each week we respond to a question submitted by a listener or one that we make up ourselves.
I'd love that you've started to explain Catholic things in your homily during ordinary time. This is a brilliant idea.
And the past couple of weeks, we've covered genuflecting and the triple sign of the cross at the beginning of the Gospel.
And there are a couple of things I wanted to ask you about today.
There's a time during the Creed where we bow. That's pointed out to us in the missal as well. And I noticed that when, during the Glory to God, you look down when you say Jesus Christ.
So just asking about those two things.
[00:04:13] Speaker B: Yeah, and I'll probably even try to cover these also in the homilies at some point. But it's good to talk about it.
First off, both of these are in the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, which is a series of instructions about how to say Mass at the beginning of the Big Book that you see me say Mass with. And so, first off, during the creed, GERM, General Instruction of the Roman Missal, sometimes acronym to GERM G I R M GERM 137, says the symbol or creed is sung or recited by the priest together with the people, with everyone standing at the words Et incarnatus est, or in other words, the part where we talk about the Incarnation, the Holy Spirit became man, all make a profound bow. And profound bow elsewhere in the germ is defined as a body bow. So it's actually a real bow. It's not just a shallow bow.
This gesture, which all present are to do according to their mobility, is a sign of reverence at the Incarnation.
So next time I'll tell you more about the other one.
[00:05:10] Speaker A: Okay, great.
Last week we celebrated Word of God Sunday, and so let's have a Bible as a resource this week. And you've ordered Bibles for parishioners to pick up from the office for the low, low price of $40.
[00:05:26] Speaker B: Very good.
[00:05:27] Speaker A: And there are many more resources to dive more deeply into the Bible, such as the Bible in a Year podcast.
And I've got a couple of resources that will help us with our Bible study. So the Beautiful Bible from Ascension Press. Great.
[00:05:40] Speaker B: The Bible and A Year Podcast.
[00:05:42] Speaker A: And they also have a companion. So this is one of three parts. The. That's days one to 120, and it's sort of meant to be read along with the podcast.
[00:05:52] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:05:52] Speaker A: And it's got some extra areas of focus, so it's. It's perfect for the podcast and it's a great companion.
[00:05:57] Speaker B: That's cool.
[00:05:58] Speaker A: And then there's this other book experience, the Bible, which was patterned after the Bible in a Year podcast by Liz Pietrantonio.
[00:06:05] Speaker B: Okay.
I'll take your word for it that it's a good book. Oh, there, it's good.
[00:06:10] Speaker A: The Bible's great.
[00:06:11] Speaker B: The Bible. We know that the Bible's number one.
And yeah, definitely check out the Bible in your podcast if you haven't. If you haven't gone through the Bible. I think every Catholic needs to go through the Bible at least once, but not just in a oh, I made it through so I can check it off my list way. So Father Michael Schmitz, he does a great job reading, explaining, just daily dose or hey, if you need more than a year. But at least it can continue to help you go through. Let scripture shape your heart. Get to know God better. Bible Editor podcast. Beautiful.
[00:06:40] Speaker A: Maybe something for us to kind of pair off on our side to do maybe a version through the church where you can help guide people through the parishion. An idea for later, though.
[00:06:50] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:06:53] Speaker A: We are moving through ordinary time now. A couple more Sundays, then Lent. Is it too early to start thinking about Lent?
[00:07:00] Speaker B: No, no, it's great. I recommend you do think about Lent.
Do you have something else you want.
[00:07:05] Speaker A: To say or can I ask you, how can we prepare our hearts for Lent?
[00:07:07] Speaker B: I think you can choose something to sacrifice, to give up, to change that you know will draw you closer to Christ. What is something you can change? Some small thing at least maybe think about reading scripture more. Could Be Bible. In your podcast, you finally get that going. Daily rosary, or at least part of it, going to confession more regularly. And also reflect honestly what is holding you back from God?
What are the biggest things holding you back? Okay, that's a good area to find something that you can do different for Lent and then hopefully it carries through. You don't want to just get closer to God temporarily and then recede back. Right. You want this to be a lifelong improvement that you start building in Lent. Also, we're going to bring back Lenten bingo. Stay tuned for that. You get the bingo, you get a prize. And of course, it always starts well, if you come to Ash Wednesday with an open heart, ready to receive those ashes and receive that call to repent. Right. To turn from sin and to believe in the gospel, to really, really kind of have that stark look as we begin again with the Lord, Lent. It's a great season. We look forward to it. Beautiful.
[00:08:11] Speaker A: Father, there's so much happening in our community. Our parishioners, of course, can check out the website and the bulletin every week. There's amazing, amazing opportunities coming up as well. What would you like to highlight about.
[00:08:21] Speaker B: The parish this week?
Well, here's a few cool updates among many. As always, check the bulletin for all the stuffs. But this weekend, that is January 31st and February 1st. Father Michael Mascarenas is back. He's gonna come preach again, so you might remember he was here a little while back. Always, always really good guy to have around.
[00:08:38] Speaker A: Always a joy.
[00:08:39] Speaker B: Yeah. The Catholic Women's League has a women's retreat that will be wonderful, open to all women. February 7th, Saturday, February 7th, Catholic Women's League women's retreat. Not just for Catholic women of the Catholic Women's League, but for all women.
Claire's last weekend, apparently I want to make up new words. Claire's last weekend is February 7th and 8th, so we're going to say goodbye to her at the end of all Masses. So we want to just be there to say thank you.
[00:09:04] Speaker A: So we're going to be declared then?
[00:09:06] Speaker B: We will be declared. That was a good one. And also on February 14, Bishop Dabrowski will be there at the Bishop's annual dinner and dance charity fundraiser. Still got some tickets. Let me know. I'll just also note this is kind of out of order, but February 2nd will be Bishop Dabrowski's installation Mass. It'll be a really big, beautiful event at the cathedral at 11am on that Monday. So lots of cool stuff happening. And that's just some of it. Oh, wow.
[00:09:32] Speaker A: Always cool stuff happening here. Boom.
Well, that is just about all the time we have for today. Thank you for your insights, Father. Let's close with a prayer.
[00:09:40] Speaker B: Yeah, sure. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen. Almighty God, we thank you for your love and mercy, all the many blessings you're pouring out on our parish and our people, our listeners, and all the graces you give, all because you love us, you treasure us, your mercy endures forever. You hold each of us so close and you really want to continue to bless us, Help us to know your love more and more and to help our parish to grow in that love and to share it evermore. May Mary, St. Michael, St. Joseph, all the saints pray for us. And we pray this all in Jesus name. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
[00:10:14] Speaker A: Thanks, Father.
And thank you for gracing our podcast like the Eucharist, graces the altar, nourishing, uplifting, and leave us hungry for more.
Thanks also to our fans and friends and odds and ends for joining us again this week through the Immaculate Heart of Mary social media channel.
[00:10:29] Speaker B: Are the odds and ends like randoms? Is that what happens? Okay, okay, okay. Just want to double check.
[00:10:35] Speaker A: I thought I should confirm because they are out there.
You can also find us again on the Apple podcast, the Spotify or the YouTubes. And if you like our show, subscribe and tell your friends. If you don't like our show, tell your friends anyway and let them discern for themselves.
[00:10:49] Speaker B: Please tell all the odds and ends that we love them and share make. Please let there be like odds and ends who start odds and ends and then they become friends.
[00:10:56] Speaker A: Yes. Bring them all in. Yeah.
[00:10:58] Speaker B: Until next, we love you.
[00:11:02] Speaker A: Oh, gosh.
Well, stay holy, stay hopeful, say your prayers and hey, don't forget to tip your priest with a smile and a Hail Mary.
Have a great continuance of ordinary time. Looking forward to Lent. We are Father Greg and jd Leaving you smarter, happier and more blessed than you were yesterday.
[00:11:19] Speaker B: Wow.
Can't believe we're doing this straight. They are really blessed.
