[00:00:24] Speaker A: Hey, everybody. Welcome to the Immaculate Heart of Mary parish podcast with Father Greg and Jeannie, probably Winona's favorite Catholic podcast. [00:00:32] Speaker B: Why is there even a question? [00:00:35] Speaker A: We are modest and we don't know all of the Catholic podcasts that exist. [00:00:40] Speaker B: If we don't know the Catholic podcasts in Winona, there's a problem. We're the only Catholic church in Winona. [00:00:45] Speaker A: Maybe they're not putting themselves out there as much as we are. [00:00:47] Speaker B: If you're a Catholic podcast in Winona, I want to collaborate with you. Can you reach out to us? [00:00:51] Speaker A: Let's do it. Thank you so much. Let's do it. And we are now available in 90 second bite sized increments. And we come to you as often as we can be ready. [00:01:02] Speaker B: Amen. [00:01:03] Speaker A: Each month Father Greg and I collect on a variety of topics related to our faith and our parish here in Winona, Ontario. And we're here to help spread the good news and further unite our parish community. So after a wee bit of a hiatus, we are back with episode number 47 and we're still crushing ordinary time. We are celebrating St. Vincent de Paul, Michaelmas. We're going to talk about forum.org and I want to ask you about new goings on here at ihm. Remember, you can find us on the Spotify, the Apple podcasts and the YouTubes. So please like or subscribe and we will find your inbox with new content as soon as we have it ready. I have a quick question before we begin. Recently there was a food truck festival and the monastery had a food truck. So I went up and asked the gentleman, they said, are you the fish fryer? He said, no, but do you know what? He was. [00:02:00] Speaker B: The fish fryer. [00:02:01] Speaker A: He wasn't the fish fryer. He was the chipmunk. [00:02:03] Speaker B: Oh, the chipmunk. That's so good. [00:02:06] Speaker A: That's a father. [00:02:07] Speaker B: I thought it was gonna be a play on the word fish space. F R I A R fryer. As opposed to F R Y E R. Yes. So you totally like red herringed me on a fish fryer joke. Okay. Yeah. [00:02:19] Speaker A: And that's right into Father Greg quality joke time right there. After that, you better start us off with a prayer. [00:02:25] Speaker B: Sure. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. God, we thank you for this day and we ask you to bless us. Bless our viewers and listeners. Fill them with your holy spirit in us. May this time be pleasing to you and fruitful for us as we get closer to you. May Mary, St. Joseph, St. Michael, pray for us. We also ask Saints Gabriel and Raphael today to intercede for us. We pray this in Jesus name. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. [00:02:46] Speaker A: Thank you. You always mentioned St. Michael and you've slid in Gabriel and Raphael there. That was. [00:02:51] Speaker B: Could be a clue on which day we're doing this filming. [00:02:55] Speaker A: So let's reveal our saint of the week. Each week we feature a saint and share some facts about their life. You know, as we strive to live out our mission as Catholics, we can always look to our saints for inspiration. This week alone we have the feasts of St. Michael, St. Raphael and St. Gabriel, along with memorials to St. Jerome and St. Therese of the Child Jesus and the Holy Guardian Angels. So we got quite an all star lineup. [00:03:17] Speaker B: Stacked team. [00:03:18] Speaker A: But this week let's focus on St. Vincent de Paul. [00:03:21] Speaker B: Okay. [00:03:22] Speaker A: St. Vincent de Paul was a pivotal Catholic figure and renowned for revolutionizing organized charity and increasing compassion for the poor. And to ensure the existence of structured support, he founded the Ladies. I lost a word. But also, yeah, the Sisters and the Lazarus. Along with co founding the Daughters of charity with St. Louis Demerriac, his approach moved charitable work beyond sporadic almsgiving into organized compassionate health care, education and relief for orphans, prisoners and refugees. His enduring legacy lives on through the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, a worldwide organization continuing his mission and to serve the poor and vulnerable with dignity. Quote time. Charity is the cement that binds communities to God and persons to one another so that he who contributes to the union of hearts in a community binds it indissolubly to God. And I even practiced that word. [00:04:18] Speaker B: Wow. [00:04:19] Speaker A: Okay. And he also said, jesus, I have trust in you. [00:04:21] Speaker B: Wow. Yeah. Check out the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Help them out if you need food. [00:04:28] Speaker A: Right on. Or any other kind of. Any other kind of support that's available. [00:04:32] Speaker B: Amen. [00:04:32] Speaker A: All right, it is time for Ask Father Greg. Each week we respond to a question submitted by a listener or one that we make up ourselves. So at a recent session of the search offered weekly here, Wednesdays nights from 7 to 8:30 NIHM. In the opening video, I was surprised to hear them reference the big Bang, cavemen and dinosaurs. Doesn't this conflict with Catholic thoughts on creation? [00:04:56] Speaker B: That might be a common misconception, but the Catholic Church doesn't force you to believe anything in terms of science per se because that's not the church's primary mission. So the church is not here to tell you all the details of evolution if that's true or not. If God used that or not. You are free as long as you're within the bounds of the Catholic Church. Right. The Catholic priest, Father George Lemaitre came up with the Big Bang theory, the scientific theory of the creation of the cosmos. Right. So church loves science, but it's actually areas of faith and morals that the church has a mandate to teach. And so while we have a Vatican observatory, while we have lots of priests and nuns and lay people who are very involved in science, the Church does not really legislate all of that. There are some nuances in terms of where, how far is too far in some of these, but you got some freedom here. [00:05:45] Speaker A: So evolution and creation can sort of coexist. [00:05:48] Speaker B: There is a theory called theistic evolution, which posits God used evolution as a means of creation. You are free to hold that within certain bounds. You still have to believe God gave a soul to Adam and Eve. [00:05:59] Speaker A: Okay. All right, let's slide into our resource of the week. And this is one from where the search comes from. Formed.org, a Catholic digital platform that has on demand access to movies, video programs, audio, talks, ebooks, and different studies for parishes. Sort of like Catholic Netflix. [00:06:17] Speaker B: That's what I say, but supercharged, way better. [00:06:20] Speaker A: What are some of your favorite elements of forum.org? [00:06:23] Speaker B: forum.org, I mean, everything on there is great. I think Cymbalon is awesome. The, the search is awesome. If you're looking to learn more about why do we believe in God, all that type of stuff, I think that there's just tons of great series on the Bible, great Bible studies, there's great ebooks, there's great kids shows. There's great, lots of great stuff. I mean, I don't even know all the great stuff on there, but check it out. Www.fomd.org and when you go, you can sign up and you can use our parish for a free subscription because our parish pays for a subscription that you then can have for free. When you type in your parish, just type Stony Creek and you'll see Immaculate Heart of Mary will come up. Then you're free to explore the infinite riches of forum.org and they far out, they far surpass my capacity to describe. [00:07:08] Speaker A: Okay, so we've got the search going on right now. Other planned uses of form.org we're going [00:07:13] Speaker B: to use it for after the search. We're probably going to watch the Case for Christ, which is by Dr. Brant Petrie. And then we're going to go through other stuff as well. We're just going to keep running more and more series and it's going to be a constant awesome time. People come, they watch a movie, they hang out. Great times. [00:07:27] Speaker A: Okay. And that's usually Wednesday nights. [00:07:29] Speaker B: Wednesday nights, 7:15, 8:30. [00:07:31] Speaker A: Okay, beautiful. So in our liturgical calendar now, we're still rocking ordinary time, but today we're got a special feast, Michaelmas, which is a new term for me. I heard it first when St. Michaelmas Lent began 40 days ago. That's right. That was a new one to me. Very familiar with the saints, Saint Michael, Saint Raphael and Saint Gabriel. How does the church balance asking for Saint Michael's interception, Intercession. Interception, because it's football. [00:08:05] Speaker B: He is intercepting the devil. He does tackle the demons. [00:08:08] Speaker A: But there's great reverence for St. Michael and protection against the devil. But how do we balance that with keeping our focus on Christ? [00:08:19] Speaker B: Well, Jesus wants us to focus on him, to love God with all our heart, mind, soul and strength. But he also says, like, watch out for the devil. He speaks about the devil a lot, actually. Jesus wants us to be aware of the spiritual warfare we find ourselves in that St. Paul also describes. But St. Michael, whose name means who is like God. Michael, he is the one who thrusts down the devil. Right. We see that in the book of Revelation, so we call on him. That's why we often pray the St. Michael prayer. Definitely encourage you to learn that. Pray that we don't have to be like hyper afraid of the devil and demons. But yeah, if we didn't know that they were trying to lead us away from God, we would be more vulnerable to them. So we ask for protection, we keep our eyes on Christ and there we go. [00:08:56] Speaker A: Okay, right on. Let's shift our focus to events at the parish. So September marks the start of the school year and also the restarting of parish programs that took a little bit of a break in the summer. It's probably a good time to review some of the new goings on at IHM as well. [00:09:13] Speaker B: Mm, yeah, check out the bulletin, check out the website. Infinite new stuff. We are starting some moms groups. Soon as you heard the Wednesday night faith night, 7:15 to 8:30 now, every Wednesday. Great opportunity if you just want to watch a video, talk to some cool Catholic people, get a chance to ask Father Greg any questions. That's awesome. Family Catechism's back up again. We also have some other groups coming soon. Children's Liturgy of the word at 11am Mass on Sundays for children 4 to 8. There's going to be even more I just honestly can't keep track of it anymore. I've given up all hope. It's just too vibrant, too exciting, too much action here. [00:09:47] Speaker A: Then we all need to leap in to support you, to provide you with more hope and more time and more energy in order to help make our parish even that much better. [00:09:55] Speaker B: Yeah. If you have gifts or talents and time and you want to share, please talk to me. I'd love to involve you. I need help. But we have a lot of great, great things. Check out the website, check out our social media, check out our bulletin, and you'll find more and more great stuff. And if you're curious or you want to start something, hey, I'm very happy to chat with you. [00:10:12] Speaker A: And you know a lot of things, but you may not know the talents that everyone brings. So that's why I love that you said, just please come up. Yeah, Talk to me and have a word. And then with their brilliant idea and let's make it happen. [00:10:22] Speaker B: Father Greg needs you to help the parish. [00:10:24] Speaker A: That's right. That's right. Well, that is just about all the time we have for today. Thank you for your insights, Father. Let's close with a prayer. [00:10:31] Speaker B: Sure. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. God, we thank you so much for the blessing of this time. We ask you to bless us, bless our listeners, bless our parish, and help us to continue to shine your light. May you bless our listeners and guide us always. We pray this in Jesus. Name the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. [00:10:48] Speaker A: Well, thank you for that, Father. And thank you for sharing your wisdom, your faith, and your wonderfully good humor. As always, you bring wisdom, warmth, and just the right amount of holy intervention. I would consider it a miracle that we finally got together, but that would be too much paperwork at the Chancery office. [00:11:04] Speaker B: That's funny. [00:11:05] Speaker A: Thanks also to our fans and friends and odds and ends for joining us this week through the Immaculate Heart of Mary social media channels, the Apple podcasts, the Spotify and the YouTubes. If you like our show, subscribe and tell your friends. And if you don't like our show, well, tell your friends anyway and let them discern for themselves. Until next time, stay holy, stay hopeful, say your prayers, and hey, don't forget to tip your priest with a smile and a Hail Mary. Have a great week, everyone. See you next time. We are Father Greg and JD Leaving you smarter, happier, and more blessed than you were last time. [00:11:37] Speaker B: Bye for now and cheers.
